Big Wins for NYCDSA - The largest Loomio group on the planet
Hello to you all from wintry Wellington, New Zealand. As I write this, the rain is pelting our windows and wind is whistling through the too-drafty house. Our winter holiday Matariki is arriving soon and, traditionally, is a time to remember and be with our family and friends. A time to enjoy the cozy warmth of being indoors with your people, with big meals, heavy blankets, and hot water bottles on your lap. We hope the weather finds you well wherever you are, whether Summer or Winter is on its way!
Organisation Spotlight: the NYC DSA
The NYC Democratic Socialists of America had stunning victories across multiple races last Tuesday, winning nine of their ten campaigns in the city, including Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier getting Congressional seats. Their campaigns were defined by grassroots, on-the-ground support, with a large volunteer base mobilized to campaign to their neighbours, increase voter turnout, and show up to vote. It is a strategy coordinated, in part, on Loomio.
The NYC DSA are not only Loomio users, they may be the largest private installation of Loomio to date with over 13,000 members using our program to coordinate, organize, strategize, and win.
Loomio allows the NYC DSA to organize thousands of people while keeping relatively low staff members, and without requiring a full-time tech team. Their election campaign was impressive in scope and effort, with thousands of volunteers knocking on over 650,000 doors and making over 100,000 phone calls.
Their election night victories show how powerful change can be achieved through effective coordination and organization, and how small groups can accomplish big change through the tireless work of passionate volunteers.
On our site, we published a case study of how NYC DSA uses Loomio. The study is especially sweet now, as it was written on the eve of campaign season, with the DSA preparing to decide on their congressional endorsements; preparations that we can now see went quite well.
New feature: Single Transferrable Vote Elections
We recently previewed a new beta feature: "Single Transferrable Vote" elections. With this method, members vote by ranking their preferred candidates, allowing for more proportional representation in an election.
